Buying a Rug in Morocco: Measurements, Materials and Delivery

Before buying a Moroccan rug, check dimensions, materials, condition and delivery terms. Use a written checklist so the piece you love also fits your home.

A rug can be a lasting reminder of Morocco, but choosing one is easier when you arrive with practical information. The colours that look wonderful in a shop still need to work with your room, and an attractive price means little until size, condition and delivery are clear. Give the purchase time instead of treating it as a hurried tour stop.

Bring measurements from home

Measure the intended space and decide whether furniture should sit on or beside the rug. Record a minimum and maximum size, not only one ideal number. Take a photograph of the room in natural light and note the colours you want to keep.

Ask the seller to measure the actual piece in front of you. Clarify whether quoted dimensions include fringes. Handmade items can vary in shape, so inspect the whole rug rather than relying on a folded display.

Separate appearance from claims

Ask which fibres are used, how the rug was made and whether repairs have been carried out. Terms such as “vintage,” “tribal,” “silk” or “antique” deserve specific explanations. A story is not independent proof of age, origin or value.

Look at the reverse, edges, fringes and any worn areas in suitable light. Request a written description of the claims that matter to your decision. If authenticity or investment value is essential, arrange qualified independent advice rather than treating a sightseeing guide as an appraiser.

Agree on the visit before entering

Tell your guide how much browsing time you want and whether you are interested in purchasing. Ask if the stop involves a commercial relationship. You should be able to compare pieces, decline a purchase and continue the day without pressure.

A shopping-focused outing can give more useful time than adding a rug visit to an already full monument tour. If only one guest wants to browse, agree on a comfortable arrangement for companions before the visit begins.

Compare the complete cost

Establish the currency, payment method and final price before paying a deposit. If delivery is involved, ask who packs the rug, who carries it, whether tracking and insurance are provided and what happens if it is damaged or does not arrive.

International shipping can involve destination taxes, import rules and carrier charges. Obtain current information for your own destination rather than accepting “everything included” without a definition. If you plan to carry the rug, check your airline's baggage limits and the packed dimensions directly.

Leave with a useful receipt

The receipt should identify the seller and the exact item, with dimensions, agreed description, amount paid and any balance. Keep photographs of the rug and its identifying features. For delivery, record the address carefully and retain the written shipping terms.

Do not make the final decision simply because the group is waiting outside. A night to think can be valuable, especially when a piece costs enough to affect the rest of your trip.

Is bargaining expected?

It may be part of the shop's sales process. Stay courteous, compare the complete offer and be ready to decline.

Can my guide guarantee a rug's age?

Do not assume so. Ask what expertise and independent evidence support any claim.

Where can I plan a craft-focused visit?
